Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat causes cellulite?
The skin is connected to the underlying muscle by fibrous bands made of collagen (called 'septae'). Over time, these bands harden and contract, and pull down the skin causing puckering and dimpling. The contraction also creates a blockage of the blood vessels and lymphatics leading to trapped fluids and swollen looking skin.
When fat cells become over-inflated they worsen the look of cellulite by pushing up between the septae causing further bulging and lumpiness. The problem is compounded by the aging process as skin becomes thinner and collagen breaks down and loses ability to hold the fat cells neatly in place. Treatments for cellulite need to address both the fat cells and collagen structure in order to have good results.
I am not overweight, why do I have cellulite?
The belief that cellulite is a sign of obesity is a myth: In reality, more than 80% of women over the age of 20, regardless of their weight or size, are affected by cellulite. Even very young and very thin women are affected. Poor diet, slow metabolism, hormone changes, the pill, genetics and even dehydration may play a part in whether or not you have cellulite.
Female hormones (estrogen, and to a lesser extent, progesterone) play important roles in the formation of cellulite. Estrogen hormone stimulates the storage of fat, which is needed for menstruation, pregnancy, and lactation. In addition, during the later phases of pregnancy, estrogen also causes the breakdown of collagen fibers to relax the cervix, making it possible for a woman to deliver her baby. The process, however, isn't exclusive to the birthing period — it continues through a woman's lifetime, weakening the skin's structure. This collagen breakdown sets the stage for the formation of cellulite. Progesterone may also contribute to the cellulite problem by weakening veins and causing water retention and weight gain.
Why don't men get cellulite?
Cellulite is mostly a women's problem. Due to different body physiques, men tend to have lower percentages of body fat, while women have higher percentages. In addition, men tend to have accumulate fat in the abdominal area while women have fat deposits mostly in the buttocks and thighs. Men have thicker skin and the fat chambers are smaller and more tightly-held together. Therefore, cellulite is not often found in men.
Why haven't I ever heard of VelaShape before?
VelaShape™ has only recently become available in Australia - infact Shrinc was the first to acquire and offer the device. VelaShape has enjoyed huge success in the US and Europe. It has been featured on TV programs like Dr Phil, E!, Rachael Ray, CBS and NBC News, as well as magazines including Grazia, Harpers Bazaar, Glamour and Hello [check it out here]. Over 10,000 people a day get treated with VelaShape technology - they just don't talk about it! (except Kim Kardashian...). The treatment is a well kept secret of celebrities - Jennifer Aniston and Sharon Stone are both rumoured to be devotees, along with a long list of post-baby Hollywood mums. No wonder they all look so good!
What is elōs?
Patented elōs (Electro-Optical Synergy) technology, as featured in VelaShape™, is the first and only system that simultaneously harnesses the power of bi-polar radio frequency (RF) and optical energy. This technology was developed by the Intense Pulse Light inventor, Dr. Shimon Eckhouse and physicist, Dr. Michael Kreindel. Radio frequency is a highly controllable energy heat source that works synergistically with optical energy. The combination of infrared and conducted RF energies precisely heat the target treatment area, and the mechanical massage and suction enhance the treatment to ensure optimal results.
What is the difference between VelaShape™ and VelaSmooth?
The VelaShape™ is an improvement on the original VelaSmooth™ technology. The device has been refined and the power level has been increased to allow for reduced treatment time, frequency and number of sessions. It is now possible to get results in 4-6 sessions once a week, a comparitively shorter timeframe, with fewer appointments and increased intensity. What results can I expect?
Visible changes are often noticeable after 1 or 2 weeks. There is usually visible and measurable contouring of the lumps and bumps of the skin as evidenced by post-treatment photos, girth measurements, and what most patients love the most… how their favorite pair of pants seem to fit much better! Men seem to respond very well to our treatments for contouring of torso, love handles and abdominal areas. You will most likely notice an improvement in your skin tone. The appearance of stretch marks and loose skin may also be improved.
What is the average amount of improvement that clinical studies have demonstrated?
For VelaShape, studies have shown that most people will see a noticeable improvement after an initial series of treatments, though your results may vary. Review all clinical studies here
How long do results last for aesthetic treatments?
Depending on your lifestyle, results can last from a few months to a few years. As cellulite, skin sagging and the deposit of fat is a dynamic process, maintenance is recommended. We recommend a touch up treatment or a 2 week detox every 3-6 months to avoid recurrence of new fat or cellulite. Ultimately, it is up to your body and personal preference as to how many maintenance visits are required.
Is there anything I should do to maximise the results of my aesthetic treatments?
PLEASE remain fully hydrated (before, during, after and between treatments). Adequate hydration helps to remove the fat wastes and toxins from the body. If you don’t flush them out then they may be absorbed back into the fat cell... So please drink up! 2-4 litres of fluid per day is recommended.
Like all non-surgical or surgical techniques, results will last longer if you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly. Treatments are not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise is recommended for a balanced lifestyle.
Is this an alternative to liposuction?
Our programs are for patients who desire visible results for their body shaping and contouring needs without surgery. Treatments can also complement liposuction, by tightening loose skin prior to the procedure. They are often used post-liposuction to decrease the cellulite that remains on the top level of the skin, as well as smooth irregularities in the skin caused by the procedure (sometimes the cannula can leave little track marks, dimples, and grooves and treatments can help smooth these out).
Shrinc specialise in non-surgical body enhancement. We don't have other surgical procedures to upgrade you to (like liposuction). Our staff perform the same treatments, day in and day out. We love what we can do for clients and have seen first-hand the amazing results possible using our systems.
We use the latest and most advanced techniques and protocols for optimum results. VelaShape, for example, is an operator-dependant device, that is, if the therapist doesn't apply the treatment properly, the patient won't get results. We firmly believe we can give you the very best non invasive aesthetic treatments available.
